Welcome to the web site of the Saffron Walden & District Society of Model Engineers. The Club is in a very attractive location next to the Audley End Railway and Audley End House and Gardens. We have a 1300ft ground level track in 5”/7¼” gauge together with a raised 400ft track for 3½”/5”/7¼” gauges.
On Saturdays and Sundays from Easter to the end of October Club members are usually on hand to give rides on our railway using steam, electric or diesel locomotives. Always popular with children, and adults alike, there is also a very attractive picnic area.
Our big news for the 2012 season is a major change to our ground level track which now runs alongside the Audley End Railway - see our News pages for more details.
Welcome
Visitors to our Club

Our track is adjacent to the Audley End Railway, by kind permission of Lord Braybrooke. Why not combine a visit to our track with a ride on the AER, a 10¼” gauge railway running for 1½ miles through attractive woodland.
Audley End Railway

We hold Club running days on Bank Holiday Mondays and the last Sunday of the month from Easter to October. Visitors are very welcome to take a ride on one of our trains.
Visiting locos are also welcome to use our track, although prior notice is appreciated.
Membership

The Club has around 50 members whose interests cover several aspects of model engineering. Many have railway locomotives covering gauges from 3½” to 7¼” and representing steam, battery/ electric or internal combustion power. Some Club members are also building traction engines.
Club members are able to assist each other with machines and tools in their workshops, there is also advice on hand to solve most problems when building a new model.
The Club has expertise in the construction and testing of model steel or copper boilers.
